Drugstore Make-Up Starter Kit
If you’re new to the beauty world and want some advice on what products to invest in to get your makeup collection started, you’re in the right place. Here I will be giving my top recommendations of products that I personally love and would recommend to those of you who want to try out different products but don’t want to break the bank! I've tried my best to make this a realistic makeup starter kit, so most of the products are fairly cheap. Hope you enjoy!
Primer
You may want to
skip this step if your makeup stays on well already, but for me a primer is a
necessity. My drugstore favourite would have to me the Maybelline Baby Skin Instant Pore Eraser. This is a silicone-based primer and it provides a nice
base for your makeup, smoothing out any obvious pores you may wish to conceal.
However, the only down side to this product (in my opinion) is that it can be a
bit too oily for my skin sometimes, so if you’re an oily skinned girl I would
steer away from this one! But for £7.99 it’s a great product and a much more
affordable option than something such as Benefit’s POREfessional primer, which
retails at £24.50!
Foundation
When it comes to
foundation it can be hard to pick one product that will work for everyone
because we all have different skin types, be that oily, dry or a combination of
both! For those of you oily-skinned girls
who struggle to keep your base looking matte, I would suggest you try out the
L’Oreal Infallible Matte Foundation. This is one of my favourite drugstore
foundations for when my skin turns oilier. It is a medium to full coverage
foundation, which is buildable – so great if you want to cover any spots or
blemishes on your face! For £7.99 you
would struggle to find a cheaper foundation that lives up to the same quality!
If however your
skin leans towards the dry/combination side of things then I have a different
foundation recommendation for you. The L’Oreal True Match Foundation is a
medium coverage foundation but similarly to the L’Oreal Infallible Matte
Foundation it is also buildable. This foundation is available in a wide variety
of shades so as long as you get the right shad you shouldn’t have much of a
problem with your face colour matching your neck! The only thing I would be
wary of for those of you with combination skin is that the foundation can be
quite runny. So if parts of your skin are oily, I would definitely suggest you
powder throughout the day to prevent any unwanted shine. This foundation is
usually £9.99 from Superdrug, but it is currently on sale for £7.99 – bargain!
Concealer
If you have a few
little blemishes or redness that you wish to conceal then I would recommend
that you try out the L’Oreal True Match Concealer. When I’m having a good skin
day, this is all I need to use. I is a medium coverage concealer and covers any
redness on my face. You can pick one of these up for £6.99 at Superdrug.
However, if you
want a concealer that’s more heavy duty then I would suggest you try out the
Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer. If you have any spots that you’re
struggling to conceal then this could be the solution you’re looking for. One
of the downsides is the colour selection because it only comes in 4 colours, so
you will need to make sure you get the one closest to your skin tone. But for
£4.19 it’s an excellent starting place if you don’t want to spend too much
money – right now its on sale for £3.99 at Superdrug – even better!
Powder
If you want your
foundation and concealer to stay in place all day then I would suggest you use
a powder to set your base. The Rimmel Stay Matte Pressed Powder is perfect if
you want to keep you skin shine free but not looking cakey. The only downside
is if you have very oily skin, you may need to top this up around lunchtime if
you’re out all day but other than that it’s great. You can pick one up from
Superdrug for only £3.99 so it’s not going to break the bank!
Blush
To prevent your
skin from long one shade of foundation you may want to add some colour back
into your cheeks. If you’ve not used blush before then I would suggest you try
out the Rimmel Lasting Finish Mono Blush in the Shade ‘Pink Rose – 20’. This is
a very pretty pink shade, which is quite subtle, so it’s perfect if you’re not
used to wearing blush. For only £3.99 it’s a bargain as you won’t need much to
do the job, so it should last you a while. (It’s currently on sale for £2.79 on
asos!)
Highlighter
If this seems
like too much makeup for you to invest in all at once then you could skip this
step. However, if you want your skin to have a healthy glow then a bit of
highlighter on the tops of your cheekbones can be a nice touch. The MUA ‘undress your skin’ highlighter produces a really pretty glow, and for £3 it’s
not too expensive.
Eyeshadow
For eye shadows,
MUA have a few lovely palettes, but my favourite is the ‘undress me too’
palette. You get 12 shadows, which are a mix of shimmery and matte shades for
only £4! (That works out less than 34p per shadow!) These are all very nicely
pigmented and are great everyday colours to wear.
My other
recommendation if you’re willing to spend a few more pennies would be the
Maybelline Colour Tattoo in the shade ‘On and On Bronze’. This is a gorgeous
gold/bronzy cream eye shadow that looks lovely on blue eyes especially. It’s
perfect for those mornings when you want a bit of colour on your lids but you
don’t have much time to spend blending shadows. For £4.99 it’s a great option.
Mascara
Now mascara can
be one of those products that you either love or hate, depending on how you
want your lashes to look. Personally I like my lashes to be defined and as long
as possible, without and clumping at all. This is why I love the Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara. I find it to be the perfect mascara for what I want
and for only £7.99 its not too expensive either.
Lips
If you’re new to
makeup you most likely won’t want to go for a bright red lip, but more likely a
subtle lip balm. If then a lip balm is what you’re after I would highly recommend
the Maybelline Baby Lips in the shade ‘Pink Punch’. This is a bright pink
lipbalm in the stick, but on the lips it just leaves a subtle pink tint. You
can build it up if you wish, so for £2.99 it’s a nice price.
If you want to go
for a lipstick however I would suggest you start with a nude shade to introduce
yourself. I would recommend the MUA Lipstick in the shade ‘Bare – 14’. This
lipstick is very moisturizing on the lips and great for beginners. It’s in a
nude shade so if you’re not great at applying Lipstick yet it won’t be too
obvious. Plus it’s only £1!
